In accordance with the Food Safety Law of the People's Republic of China, the Administrative Measures for the Registration and Filing of Dietary Supplements and other provisions, the State Administration for Market Regulation has formulated the Guide to the Naming of Dietary Supplements (2019 Edition), which is hereby issued.

Guide to the Naming of Dietary Supplements (2019 Edition)

In order to regulate the naming of dietary supplements for registration and filing and avoid misleading consumers, this Guide is formulated in accordance with the Administrative Measures for the Registration and Filing of Dietary Supplements (hereinafter referred to as the "Measures"), the Detailed Rules for the Review and Approval of Registration of Dietary Supplements (2016 Edition) and relevant laws, regulations, rules, specifications and standards. This Guide shall apply to the naming of dietary supplements registered and filed within the territory of the People's Republic of China.

I. Name Composition of Dietary Supplements
The name of a dietary supplement shall consist of a trade name, a generic name and an attribute name, which are arranged in that order:
(I) trade name refers to the name of a legally registered trademark used by the dietary supplement or the name of an unregistered trademark which meets the provisions of the Trademark Law of the People's Republic of China (hereinafter referred to as the "Trademark Law");
(II) generic name refers to the name which indicates the main raw materials and other characteristics of the product; and
(III) attribute name refers to the name which indicates the dosage form of the product or the categorical attribute, etc. of the dietary supplement.

II. Basic Principles for Naming Dietary Supplements
(I) Compliance with the relevant provisions of relevant State laws and regulations.
(II) Compliance with the principle of one name for one product.
(III) Reflection of the true attributes of the product, being concise and easy to understand, conforming to the usage of the Chinese language, and facilitating the identification and memory of consumers.
(IV) Not involving any function of disease prevention or treatment, or misleading or deceiving consumers.
